  Smart Labels, Tags and PCB's
An RFID tag is commonly attached to a product carrier such as a carton, pallet, reusable tote, shipping container, or even the product itself so that it may travel with the product itself and serve as its identifier. There are several categories of tags (transponders):

Smart Labels

Smart Labels are RFID enabled labels. These labels are similar in appearance to standard paper labels but contain an RFID inlay inserted between the adhesive and substrate. Smart labels provide the ability to print on the face of the tag including the same label formats prevalent today in addition to allowing data to be recorded in the RFID inlay embedded in the tag. Using printer encoders that are available today you may encode and print on Smart Labels and comply with RFID compliance mandates at its most basic level.

Smart Labels are available in High Frequency (13.56 MHz) and Ultra High Frequency (868 MHz - 960 MHz) and come in many different form factors. Smart labels may be printed on and encoded using printer encoders from Zebra and Printronix or read and encoded using interrogators.

Encapsulated Tags

Encapsulated tags are RFID inlays surrounded by a robust and damage resistant covering. Encapsulated tags come in different shapes and sizes and accommodate different frequencies. They offer survivability in extreme environmental conditions including high impact, chemicals, dirt and liquids where Smart Labels would not.

Some tags are manufactured to be mounted on metal while others are created for use on re-useable totes and plastic containers. Encapsulated tags are available in Ultra-High (868 MHz - 960 MHz) and Microwave (2.45 GHz) Frequencies.

PCB’s

PCB’s (or inserts) are meant to be embedded into a product or carrier, and although impervious to high temperatures it requires some encapsulation if it is to have direct contact with outside environmental conditions (e.g. rain, excessive moisture, etc). Benefits are low cost and the ability to endure environments where RFID Labels would not survive.
